Per aspera ad astra. Eight Belles´ Star shines altogether Elbereth and Ruffian. Siempre a tu lado, "bellaocho"!!!! - J.I.L. Gomez; Sevilla, Spain You are my favorite horse. You are still running races in my room with my other toy horses. I love you. - K. Jackson (age 7); Georgetown, KY
I was rooting for you to win, beautiful girl and you did so very well. That moment when they said you had been hurt and the horrible news that soon followed it are going to stick with me forever. You ran so well and looked so beautiful, so strong and with so much heart. I may have never met you in person, but I knew from watching you on screen (both online and on the coverage at the Derby itself) that you were someone special who could triumph and more than show your own against the boys. You proved to the world that you could do it and that girls could do anything. Run free now, and be happy, whole and free from all pain. You've shown us all just what a champion is made of. Thank you. - S. Navin; Ypsilanti, MI I am a licensed owner and a lifelong racing fan. I love my sport, but we must do more to look out for the welfare and safety of the horse, and we must do it collectively, not just individually. It was very unfortunate that the winner's circle celebration had to go on in light of what happened to Eight Belles. I'm not sure how it could have been handled better, but the proposed eight bells tribute might go a long way with fans toward acknowledging the ultimate sacrifice that this gallant filly made on May 3, 2007. - S. Warren; Brentwood, CA
This effort need not be for just one horse. Tolling 8 bells before every Derby would be a lovely tradition to remember all of the horses that have fallen in any race. - S. Whipp; Courtenay, ND I am a horse lover AND a sailor and support this petition whole-heartedly. What a beautiful, meaning tribute for an amazing horse. - A. Kammer; Cockeysville, MD
She gave her life for a sport many of us loved, and she coaxed the industry into looking into more ways to keep those magnificent animals safe. She did so much for this sport in 2 minutes, why can't we have the 8 bells rung at every Kentucky Derby? - A. Fitzgerald; Pueblo, CO It was best said by the jockey aboard Big Brown, "Big Brown gave his heart in the race, Eight Belles gave her life." May the Belles toll forever in her memory the first Saturday in May. ;-Dr.F - E. Finnochio, D.V.M.; Harrisville, RI
Eight Belles was a beautiful and amazing miracle who deserves to be honored and remembered forever for her courage and determination. Regardless of my feelings of the industry of horseracing and its abuses, I urge the Kentucky Derby to pay tribute to her memory. - J. Derosier; Worcester, MA Eight Belles was a gallant, gutsy, wonderful athlete. She needed a better track to run on, which I think will happen at Churchill Downs. Long live her memory, and I think we should honour her before the 135th., just as you suggest. Thank you, Eight Belles, you were the champion of that race! - S. Cawfield; Ajax, ON, Canada
