I was there for the derby, we were getting cell phone feeds from people around us as to what was going on. First they thought heart related, then we heard 2 broken legs, then she was gone. Just such a shame; everyone crying. We saw a horse shaped balloon going up to the sky shortly after she was gone, hubby said look she's going up to heaven and we both cried so. I am so sorry for Larry, Rick and Gabriel, and everyone involved with this filly. - G. Quinn; Syracuse, NY
As Barbaro's ongoing struggle led to a greater awareness and funding for laminitis research, may honoring Eight Belles memory and her magnificent Derby run result in a major effort toward the safety reforms that are so desperately needed for the horse racing industry. It'll create a greater legacy in their honor than any racetrack feats could ever have accomplished. - T. Lewis; McCammon, ID
Beauty, grace, heart, courage and valor was what she showed, may her memory live forever in every horseman. - E. Karugu; Nakuru, Bahrain
"And as they run, moving like the wind toward heaven, we travel with them, if only in our hearts." Rest well, sweet Belles. - MG; Palm Beach, FL
On a lighter note...I hope a horse named Fiftyloudwhistles doesn't go down? - K. Houlihan; Winchester, NY
Editor's note: Thanks for the laugh. That too is a part of healing.
The heroic heart of Eight Belles is a tribute to all thoroughbreds. To remember her at the very next derby would be lovely, touching, and completely appropriate. - E. Fornaro; Pittsburgh, PA
A tribute cannot do this beautiful filly justice and doesn't make up for the loss of her life. But maybe she'll know that for that 8 seconds before the next Kentucky Derby, that a lot of people are thinking about her. - K. Taylor; Youngstown, OH
What a terrible tragedy for such a beautiful horse. Her vibe, her brilliance and her heart will be remembered forever. Even as I am writing this my heart is full for her. - E. Phillips; Miles City, MT
My heart raced with joy as I watched her run the the finish and broke with everyone else as I learned she was down. But in the end, she was and is a great inspiration. - H. Purdue; Springfield, OH
This will be so simple to do yet so full of meaning and respect for Eight Belles and all the other horses racing at Church Hill Downs. - C. Pfeffer; Crosby, TX
