Here is a sampling of comments:

It broke my heart to see her on the race track, in such pain and to hear the stories about the weakness of the race horses. As a horse owner, I cherish the sight of my horses happily grazing in their pastures, playing and just being horses. Each with a story to tell if you would only listen. Eight Belles will not be able to tell her story, but we can. We Must! - J. Sweeney; Mullins, SC I was very lucky to meet Eight Belles on Sunday, April 20 of this year. My neighbor works for Fox Hill Farms and they were very gracious to let me pet her, talk to her, and even feed her some peppermints. She was loved and cared for and gave everyone around her a lot of hope because she was doing so well. I will always remember how she nipped at my hair and put her head on my head. - Eva; Lexington, KY
It's only fitting and right that 8 bells should chime before the running of the 135th Kentucky Derby, where this beautiful little girl raced her heart out and ultimately gave her life. Eight Belles, you're light has not gone out, but shines ever brightly. Run free, little one, run free. - Judy; Ashway, RI Eight Belles was a beautiful filly who gave her life doing what she loved to do, run. It would be most appropriate for Churchill Downs to ring eight bells in honor of her and all horses who have given their lives. The ringing of eight bells signifies an end and a new beginning, hopefully a better one for all our horses. - K. Fischer; Long Island, NY
I am truly touched by the wonderful admiration showered on one of God's most magnificent creatures, Eight Belles. - M. Wilson; Canberra, Australia You left us a legacy of legendary effort and spirit in an unforgettable 2 minutes..and we will never forget. Run in peace and health forever... - J. Hall; Royersford, PA
What a great filly. I was in Fla. when she was. I went to her barn every day to see her and fed her sweet potatoes. She loved them. She was very special to me. - T. Urschel; Germantown, OH For Eight Belles and all those other beautiful free spirits who have gone before her among many Barbaro and our own 'Gorgeous' George Washington. - J. Monk; Great Totham, United Kingdom
My heart has been hurting for 6 days. I can't get the visions out of my head. The beautiful vision of her running down the stretch and the painful one of her down. She needs this tribute and we all need some changes to come. Thank you to the Jockey Club for taking action. May something good come out of this tragedy. - M. Goode, DVM; Southlake, TX Dear Rick, I was so saddened by Eight Belles passing and had met to write you a note to tell you that I was thinking of you and sorry for your loss. I think that this is a well deserved honor and personally will appalled if the request is denied. I will forward this to everyone I know. Deepest Sympathy to you and yours. - Chrissy - C. Ketcham LaMonica; Wilmington, DE
